HOW YOU CAN HELP!

The Pulelehua (butterfly) is in a 75% survival decline throughout Hawai`i Nei
In the wild, the birds continue to wipe out most of the baby caterpillars, from one end of O'ahu to the other. Invasive lizards, ants and wasp predators seem to show up daily to feast on the eggs. And, if that isn't enough, the overuse of pesticides island-wide, has damaged the Monarch's immune system, making them unable to produce healthy keiki.
Sound familiar? If you've heard about the "bee disappearance", the problem, cause and situation is the same. Our Monarch butterfly is a very necessary pollunator to having a balanced eco-system in Hawai`i. The bees just get more press.

Keep planting CROWN FLOWERS
It's the only plant our delicate Monarch Butterfly can lay her eggs on and what her caterpillars need to eat.
Butterfly survival depends on it . . . and YOU!

All Monarch Butterfly gardens must begin with the planting of a Crown Flower. They just need a sunny place to grow with well-draining soil. No need to buy expensive potting soil...adding sand to almost anything will work.
The next step is up to you, your situation and available time. You can stop at one plant and let nature take her course. This will support a small amount of butterfly survival, it will certainly help and you've already begun giving back to the `aina.
PLANT IT and they will COME
Natures rule definitely applies here. The more crown flowers you have the more pulelehua you will attract. Just remember NOT to use any pesticides.
Where can I get Crown Flowers?
The quickest way is to get a stem cutting from anyone you know. You'll be surprised how many people might have a crown flower tucked away in an auntie's, friend or neighbors yard. Just ask around. Our local community is very giving and they will aloha you.
Then place your cutting in water to grow roots or put directly into a pot. Transfer into your yard when it has taken hold and you feel it can survive.
I sometimes have stems and starter plants. Right now, the supply is inconsistent, mostly because I do it all myself, manage the Pulelehua Project and work 2 other jobs. I'm always up for sharing what I have, just send me an email to find out if any are available.

How Can I Help?
As a volunteer, you will receive the unmatched feeling of fulfillment that comes with helping to bring joy to many.
It's really quite simple
  • Begin with planting Crown flowers
  • Make cuttings and share them with Everyone
  • Keep caterpillars at of harms way in 'safe' cages
  • Get ohana, keiki and friends involved
A butterfly garden can do several things. Perhaps most important, it can add to your enjoyment of nature and that of your ohana and friends. You can use it to raise butterflies and help children learn about nature and how to restore our natural environment. The power to enrich a patch of Earth with our beautiful Monarch butterflies, no matter how humble the plot or simple the effort, is awesome.
Butterflies have had very hard times lately
Whatever we can do as guardians to help heal
the wounds of a careless society, we must do
Butterfly gardening is such an act
Perhaps most importantly, it keeps us in touch with our `aina on an everyday basis. Few outdoor activities are more rewarding and easily available than attracting butterflies to your well-loved garden.
Monarch Caterpillar

Can't keep your precious pulelehua out of harm's way on your own or don't have the time to hand raise them? No need worry. We ALWAYS need caterpillars and butterflies to share with others.
Our Pulelehua Pick-up service is happening again. Just give us a call and a butterfly caretaker will be there. Contributions to our Hawaiian Monarch butterfly restoration program are most welcome and necessary.

Butterfly Hawaii Donations
We made a promise to help a delicate creature to continue to survive in the Hawaiian Islands...our enchanting Pulelehua. We continue to inform, support and connect butterfly caretakers to information, resources and each other. But we cannot do it alone. With your help, we have the power to make a difference, live in beauty, while sharing 'precious moments' together. Without the commitment of those who believe in the spirit of the butterfly, the Pulelehua Project could hardly fulfill our many requests from those wishing to experience their presence and blessings.

As part of our fundraising program, we offer a variety of release packages to suit your specific needs and always welcome custom requests. Their shimmering beauty and graceful flight are a wonder to young and old alike.

All proceeds are used to help others learn about and grow Monarch Butterfly gardens and habitats. We do everything we can to share knowledge, supplies and the butterfly experience with all who ask.
