HOW TO PLANT CROWN FLOWERS   The easiest way to grow crown flowers is from cuttings. You'll have the best luck with stems at least an inch in diameter. The ends can be placed in water to root then planted in soil when ready. Or stems can be coated in rooting powder and placed directly into a mix of sand and potting soil or sand and peat moss. I've also had success using any orchid potting mix from the local hardware store. Once the roots take hold and you see new leaves, replant your crown flower in a sunny, partially sheltered location. Butterflies are very fragile and do not tolerate excessive wind. Crown Flower is hardy when placed in well-draining arid soil. Blooms are year-round and it makes a good hedge!
If you want to add a little landscaping beauty and keep your Monarch blessings close by, try planting nectar flowers. Although your butterflies must always have crown flowers to survive, this is a fun and encriching extra step.
