HELP SAVE THE HAWAIIAN BUTTERFLY
Like many animals today, the Hawaiian Monarch butterfly is threatened by habitat destruction and non-indigeneous predators. If we don't do something, the Monarchs could die out and we might never again see the flash of a beautiful orange and black wing. Because of their amazing transformation from egg to the incredible naturally designed elegance of the butterfly, they can serve humankind as a visual template for change and hope. Many do not realize that if it weren't for the butterflies, we could quickly run out of fruits, flowers and vegetables for our tables.

Monarch Butterfly TransformationMonarch Caterpillar The main problems confronting our Monarch butterfly are:
1) The Monarch depends on Crown Flower to reproduce. It lays its eggs ONLY on crown flower (milkweed) plants and the Monarch caterpillars will only eat crown flower leaves. Unfortunately, when baby caterpillars start munching away, the pukas they make are considered unsightly by many, resulting in the cutting down of all its branches. This destructive act totally stops the continuing life cycle of the Monarch. Without their source plant, our sacred butterfly is unable to reproduce and is disappearing from our islands. The public needs to be informed.
2) Crown flowers are rarely available from our local nurseries. This has stopped many from creating a butterfly garden. Making cuttings ourselves and distributing them is the solution. We always welcome "stem" donations to the Pulelehua Project and share them as supply allows. There is no survival without them.
3) We need to intervene and build "safe houses". Butterflies are very important pollinators and unfortunately, in Hawaii, they serve as part of the old food chain. Many recent and invasive species of wasp, lizards and ants love butterflies. Once they dodge the first crew of hungry foragers then they have birds and rodents to contend with.

Nine out of ten caterpillars will never become butterflies. They will be eaten, parasited or infected before they get their wings.

Help Save the Hawaiian Monarch Butterfly

Since 2003, when we lost our leased farm land, the grassroot collective of home gardens has been solely responsible for saving the Monarch butterfly on Oahu ...one yard at a time. Our vision has always been, and still is, to rebuild our butterfly farm and education center that will include gardens, keiki flight exhibit, meeting space and butterfly supplies. With support from community volunteers, it will be a dedicated and inspiring center used to have fun, meet and work with our neighbors, beautify our environments, enjoy spiritual gifts of these exquisite creatures, promote environmental stewardship, cultural diversity and world non-violence.
